Wing Foiling in 20 Knots — Wing Size & Foil Setup Guide
Twenty knots is wing foiling's sweet spot—enough power to get going, but not so much gust that you're wrestling the wing. We'll walk you through the exact wing size, foil setup, and board pairing that works at this wind speed.
At 20 knots, ride a 4.5–5 m² wing with a mid-volume freeride board (65–85 L) and a front foil around 1,200–1,400 cm². Pick the bigger end if you're under 75 kg; go smaller if you're heavier or hunting tricks. The Duotone Unit SLS 2026 is built for exactly this window.
01 — Wing selectionWing Size: Finding Your Sweet Spot
Most riders we've talked to—from Tarifa to the Baltic—agree: 4.5 m² to 5 m² is the workhorse at 20 knots. You get genuine forward drive without overpowering, and the wing stays responsive to your hand input. It's the Goldilocks zone.
If you're under 75 kg or new to foiling, start with 5 m². Heavier riders or those chasing tricks go 4.5 m². At 20 knots steady, you won't need to go smaller—wind's clean enough to stay comfortable. We ship both the Cabrinha Mantis 2026 and Duotone Unit SLS in this range, and they've both got the control you need when the breeze tightens.
02 — Foil setupFoil & Board Pairing: Making It Work
At 20 knots, a front foil in the 1,200–1,400 cm² range lifts cleanly without stalling. Go 1,400 cm² if you weigh under 70 kg or you're still learning to pump; drop to 1,200 cm² if you're above 85 kg and confident. Your mast should sit around 60–70 cm—anything longer and you'll drag in the water on smaller pumps.
Board-wise, pick a 65–85 L freeride deck. At 20 knots you don't need a huge float tank—your wing's doing the work—but you do need something stable enough to land tricks. A 75 L board is our standard call: sits deep enough to feel planted, light enough to respond when you pump or slash.

Frequently asked
Technically yes, but it'll feel overpowered and sluggish. You'll spend energy fighting the wing instead of enjoying the session. Stick to 4.5–5 m² and you'll ride higher and cleaner.
1,200–1,400 cm² is your sweet spot. Heavier or newer riders go 1,400 cm²; lighter or more advanced riders can drop to 1,200 cm² for snappier response.
No—a 65–85 L freeride board gives you the stability to learn tricks and pump between gusts. Anything under 60 L will sink and exhaust you.
Not at all. 20 knots is ideal—enough to generate power without constant fighting. You can ride flat water and learn proper technique without wrestling the wing every second.
