Kitesurfing Lagos Algarve — Spot Guide 2026
Lagos in the Algarve is Europe's most reliable Atlantic kitesurfing hub. We've shipped riders there since 2003, and they all report the same: consistent 12–22 knot winds, protected bays for learning, and open water for freestyle. Here's what you need in your quiver before you go.
Lagos works because of consistent Atlantic winds (12–22 knots, February–October), Meia Praia bay for learning, and deeper spots for freestyle. Water sits 15–18°C in peak season. Bring a 5/4 mm wetsuit and a versatile all-rounder like the Duotone Evo—it'll handle the wind range without constant kite swaps.
01 — ConditionsWind & Swell: Why Lagos Works
Lagos sits where Atlantic swells meet Portugal's famous thermal wind window. You'll get consistent afternoon thermals off the coast, especially February through October. The bay itself is protected from the worst of the Atlantic chop, so you're not fighting cross-shore dumpers on your first day.
Peak season runs March to October, but winter isn't dead—we see riders grinding it year-round. The 12–22 knot range means you won't need a quiver of 5 kites. A solid 9 m² and 12 m² pair covers 90% of what you'll fly. Light-wind days (under 12 knots) are rare enough that you won't regret skipping a 7 m².
02 — Gear choiceWater Temperature & Wetsuit Sizing
The Atlantic keeps Lagos cool. Expect 15–18°C water in peak season (March to October), which is cold enough that a boardshort won't cut it. A 5/4 mm wetsuit is your baseline. If you run cold or you're planning long sessions, go 6/5 mm—you'll stay warmer and last longer on the water.
Don't overthink sizing. Most riders between 60–90 kg will ride a standard fit. If you're taller than 1.85 m or broader across the shoulders, check the product page for tall/XL fits. We stock ION, and their cuts run generous in the chest, so size down if you're between sizes.

Frequently asked
March to October gives you the most reliable winds (12–22 knots) and warmest water. February can work, but you'll want a thicker wetsuit. Winter is quieter, but consistent groundswell makes it worth a trip if you're chasing waves.
Yes. The wind range (12–22 knots) is wide enough that a single kite will leave you either bored or overpowered. A 9 m² and 12 m² pair is standard for your weight range. Check the product specs—or ask us—to confirm your sizes.
For peak season (March–October), yes. Water sits 15–18°C, and a 5/4 mm keeps you warm for 2–3 hour sessions. If you run cold or plan winter trips, go 6/5 mm instead.
Absolutely. Winter brings less thermal wind but more Atlantic swell and groundswell. The wind is less consistent, but days with 15–20 knots are common. Expect colder water (13–15°C), so pack a 6/5 mm suit.
