Kitesurfing Crete — Elafonissi & Falasarna Guide 2026
Crete's west coast is Europe's best-kept kitesurfing secret. Elafonissi and Falasarna deliver consistent Etesian winds, warm water through October, and almost no crowds. Here's where to ride and what kites to pack in 2026.
Head to Elafonissi for beginner-friendly lagoon riding (12–16 knots, May–October), or Falasarna if you want reef action and stronger conditions. Pack a Duotone Evo SLS (9–12 m²) for light-wind days and a smaller freestyle kite for when it builds. Water stays 19–22°C; a 3/2 mm wetsuit works through mid-May.
01 — Beginner CentralElafonissi — The Lagoon
Elafonissi isn't just pretty; it's forgiving. The northern shore is a massive turquoise lagoon with light chop, 12–16 knots most afternoons, and sand everywhere. You can get tangled, lose your kite, and laugh it off—no rocks, no drama. The Etesian winds are reliable May through September; June and July can push 16–18 knots by mid-afternoon.
This is where we send first-timers. Flat water means you're learning edge control and transitions, not wrestling whitewater. Launch from the northern beach near the village; conditions build predictably by noon. Bring your 9 m² and your 12 m² kite. You'll use both.
02 — Advanced ConditionsFalasarna — The Reef
Falasarna is 25 km north, and the vibe shifts immediately. The reef creates shape, the wind funnels harder, and you'll see locals doing proper freestyle. Expect 16–22 knots here when Elafonissi is sleepy. The bay faces northwest; afternoon thermals add 2–3 knots by 3 pm.
You'll want your 9 m² and a 7 m² for the pumpy days. The launch is rocky; wear boots. Once you're up, the water's cleaner and the wind is more textured. Not beginner territory, but if you're solid on your edges, this is where Crete gets exciting.

May through October. June–August is warmest but can be lighter in the mornings. September–October gives you fewer tourists and consistent 14–18 knot afternoons.
Rentals exist in Elafonissi, but they're basic and pricey. Bring your own if you've got one. If you're flying, consider shipping a quiver ahead or buying here and selling it on—we see riders do that all the time.
Elafonissi is better for fundamentals—flat water, forgiving, light wind. Once you're solid on your edges, Falasarna teaches you wave reading and wind pressure. Do both in a week.
A 9 m² and a 12 m² cover 90% of Crete's conditions. If you're heavier (75+ kg) or heading to Falasarna, add a 7 m². If you're light (under 60 kg) and sticking to Elafonissi, a 12 m² and 14 m² work too.
