Windsurfing Soma Bay Egypt — Red Sea Spot Guide 2026

Windsurfing Soma Bay Egypt — Red Sea Spot Guide 2026

Spot Guide · Windsurf

Soma Bay sits 40 km south of Hurghada on Egypt's Red Sea coast — one of Europe's best-kept thermal wind secrets. Consistent 12–20 knot winds, warm water year-round, and a protected lagoon make it perfect for freeride and wave. We'll walk you through what to bring, when to go, and how to make the most of it.

⚡ Quick answer

Soma Bay delivers steady thermal winds 12–20 knots (peaking 24–28 knots), warm water never below 22°C, and a sandy seabed that suits progression riders and experienced wave hunters. Peak season runs May–October; typical sessions go 3–4 hours. Unlike crowded kite spots, you'll find low-key local vibes and room to work.

01 — Wind patternsWhy Soma Bay Works — Thermal Wind & Setup

The magic here is thermal consistency. Mid-morning winds fire up reliably as the Red Sea heats, peak around 2–4 p.m., then drop by evening. You'll get 12–20 knots most days May through October, with occasional 24–28 knot sessions that wake up the lagoon. This isn't cold Atlantic swell chasing — it's warm, predictable, and forgiving enough to nail your technique.

The lagoon itself is protected from big ocean swell, so you're riding on chop and thermal bumps rather than walls. That means freeride dominates here, but wave riders find enough punch near the reef break to justify packing a wave sail in the 4.0–5.5 m² range. Bring a 5.5–6.5 m² for the bread-and-butter days.

💡 Tip from our buyers: Start your sessions early (8–10 a.m.) to catch the clean build-up, and don't leave the beach by 5 p.m. — the wind dies fast after that.

02 — When to goSwell, Seasons & Water Temperature

May through October is your window. Water sits 22–28°C year-round, so a 2/2 mm or 3/2 mm wetsuit handles the chill at dawn. June–August gets crowded with package tourists, but the spot stays mellow compared to Tarifa or Cape Town. September–October offers cleaner wind and warmer days without the peak-season crowds.

Winter (November–April) isn't dead — you'll get 10–16 knot days and occasional 18+ knot surprises — but consistency drops. Water dips to 22°C and the wind can be patchy. If you're visiting for one week, book May through October.

04 — MistakesThree mistakes we see every week

❌ Oversizing your board The temptation is real: you see 12 knots and grab a 140 L freeride pig. Soma Bay rewards smaller, snappier shapes (100–120 L) because the thermal wind is so steady — you won't need the volume float. Under-size by 10 L and your sessions improve overnight.
❌ Bringing just one sail A single 5.5 m² will get boring fast. Morning light wind demands a 6.5 m², afternoon thermal peaks eat a 5.0 m² or 4.5 m² for wave. Pack two sails. Three if you love wave riding.
❌ Ignoring the early-morning window Riders who sleep in miss the cleanest 90 minutes of the day. Wind starts building at 8 a.m., peaks 2–4 p.m., then collapses. Get there at 7:30 a.m. and you'll have the lagoon to yourself.

Frequently asked

What board size do you recommend for Soma Bay?

100–120 L for freeride if you weigh 65–85 kg. The thermal wind is so reliable you don't need extra volume. Heavier riders might push to 130 L, but lighter riders thrive on 90 L shapes.

Is Soma Bay safe? Any hazards?

Shallow sandy lagoon with occasional rocks and small reefs — nothing like Red Sea's big drop-offs. Wear reef shoes and watch the tide. Local operators run daily, so conditions are well-tracked.

Can beginners windsurf Soma Bay?

Progression riders, yes. True beginners should visit a kite school first or train at a dedicated windsurf spot like Dakhla. Soma's thermal chop and tight space suit intermediate+ riders.

What's the best time to visit?

May–October for wind consistency. September–October offers the best balance of reliability, fewer tourists, and warm water. June–August is crowded but solid.
