Windsurfing Soma Bay Egypt — Red Sea Spot Guide 2026
Soma Bay sits 40 km south of Hurghada on Egypt's Red Sea coast — one of Europe's best-kept thermal wind secrets. Consistent 12–20 knot winds, warm water year-round, and a protected lagoon make it perfect for freeride and wave. We'll walk you through what to bring, when to go, and how to make the most of it.
Soma Bay delivers steady thermal winds 12–20 knots (peaking 24–28 knots), warm water never below 22°C, and a sandy seabed that suits progression riders and experienced wave hunters. Peak season runs May–October; typical sessions go 3–4 hours. Unlike crowded kite spots, you'll find low-key local vibes and room to work.
01 — Wind patternsWhy Soma Bay Works — Thermal Wind & Setup
The magic here is thermal consistency. Mid-morning winds fire up reliably as the Red Sea heats, peak around 2–4 p.m., then drop by evening. You'll get 12–20 knots most days May through October, with occasional 24–28 knot sessions that wake up the lagoon. This isn't cold Atlantic swell chasing — it's warm, predictable, and forgiving enough to nail your technique.
The lagoon itself is protected from big ocean swell, so you're riding on chop and thermal bumps rather than walls. That means freeride dominates here, but wave riders find enough punch near the reef break to justify packing a wave sail in the 4.0–5.5 m² range. Bring a 5.5–6.5 m² for the bread-and-butter days.
02 — When to goSwell, Seasons & Water Temperature
May through October is your window. Water sits 22–28°C year-round, so a 2/2 mm or 3/2 mm wetsuit handles the chill at dawn. June–August gets crowded with package tourists, but the spot stays mellow compared to Tarifa or Cape Town. September–October offers cleaner wind and warmer days without the peak-season crowds.
Winter (November–April) isn't dead — you'll get 10–16 knot days and occasional 18+ knot surprises — but consistency drops. Water dips to 22°C and the wind can be patchy. If you're visiting for one week, book May through October.

Frequently asked
100–120 L for freeride if you weigh 65–85 kg. The thermal wind is so reliable you don't need extra volume. Heavier riders might push to 130 L, but lighter riders thrive on 90 L shapes.
Shallow sandy lagoon with occasional rocks and small reefs — nothing like Red Sea's big drop-offs. Wear reef shoes and watch the tide. Local operators run daily, so conditions are well-tracked.
Progression riders, yes. True beginners should visit a kite school first or train at a dedicated windsurf spot like Dakhla. Soma's thermal chop and tight space suit intermediate+ riders.
May–October for wind consistency. September–October offers the best balance of reliability, fewer tourists, and warm water. June–August is crowded but solid.
