Bol on Brač Island is Europe's most reliable wind factory. We've been sending riders there since 2003, and the Bora wind delivers 12–25 knots year-round. Here's exactly when to go, what conditions to expect, and which gear will keep you on the water.

⚡ Quick answer

Bol works year-round, but May and September are your sweet spot: steady 18–22 knot Bora winds, warm water (18–22°C), and fewer crowds. You'll need a wave board for 15+ knots and a freestyle setup for lighter days. Sessions run 2–4 hours typical, and rental shops line the beach.

01 — Seasons & ConditionsWhen to Go

The Bora wind makes Bol tick. It blows hardest in spring (March–May) and autumn (September–October), delivering rock-solid 18–22 knots with barely a lull. Summer brings lighter wind and day-trippers—fine if you're after slack sessions, less ideal if you chase power.

May is the sweet spot: water's warming up (18–22°C), the Bora's consistent, and you'll share the bay with serious riders, not beach tourists. September runs the same playbook. Winter (December–February) gets gusty—20+ knots, cold water (12–15°C), bigger waves—so pack a 5/4 mm wetsuit and respect the chop. June–August? Light and thermal. Doable, but you'll spend time waiting.

💡 Tip from our buyers: Book May or September if you can. Water's warm enough without a heavy suit, wind's reliable 6 days a week, and the vibe at the beach bars isn't packed.

02 — Boards & SailsWhat Gear to Bring

For 18–22 knot Bora days, bring a wave board (75–95 L) and a 4.5–5.5 m² sail. Wave boards carve the chop and keep you locked in when the wind picks up. Light days (12–15 knots) call for a freestyle or freeride board (110–140 L) with a 5.5–6.5 m² sail—more float, easier jibes, forgiving in lulls.

The bay itself is sheltered and relatively flat despite wind strength. You're not chasing heavy Atlantic swell here; it's about edge and speed in wind. If you're only bringing one board, pick a wave-freestyle hybrid (95–110 L)—JP Australia makes solid all-rounders that handle both Bora rage and lighter sessions. Rent locally if you don't want to fly with two boards; Bol's rental fleet is well-maintained.

04 — MistakesThree mistakes we see every week

❌ Bringing a freeride-only quiver Bol's Bora wind is reliable but sharp. A 140 L freeride board in 20+ knots will feel sluggish and exhausting. Wave boards (75–95 L) are lighter, snappier, and designed for this exact wind range. Don't skip the small stick.
❌ Visiting in peak summer (July–August) Thermal winds are weak and patchy in July–August. You'll get 8–12 knot afternoons and hours of waiting. The beach is also rammed with tourists. May, September, or October give you actual wind and space to session.
❌ Underpacking for winter water temp December–February water drops to 12–15°C. A 3/2 mm suit won't cut it for 3-hour sessions. Bring a 5/4 mm or 4/3 mm, or you'll spend the session shivering instead of carving.

Frequently asked

Is Bol crowded?

May and September are moderate—20–30 riders on a good day. Summer gets busier with tourists and lighter winds. Winter and spring shoulder months are quieter and windier.

What's the water temp year-round?

May–October: 18–22°C (3/2 mm suit enough). November–April: 12–18°C (5/4 mm or 4/3 mm). December–February is cold—bring thicker neoprene.

Can I rent gear in Bol?

Yes. Multiple rental shops on the beach stock boards and sails. Quality varies—bring your own gear if you can, but rentals work for a week's trip if you don't want to fly with boards.

What sail size for May–September Bora winds?

18–22 knots: 4.5–5.5 m². Light days (12–15 knots): 5.5–6.5 m². A 5.5 m² covers both if you're packing one sail.
