What Wetsuit Do You Need for Kitesurfing in Europe? — Guide
Europe's water swings from freezing Baltic depths to warm Mediterranean shallows—and your wetsuit needs to match. We'll show you exactly which thickness to grab for your spot and season.
Most European kiters need a 3/2 mm fullsuit for spring/autumn (12–18°C water) and a 5/4 mm or 6/5 mm hooded suit for winter (6–10°C). The first number is chest/back thickness; the second is arms/legs. Add a 2/2 mm shorty for summer if you chase Med heat. Pick Neilpryde or ION—both are engineered for cold European water.
01 — Temperature zonesRead Your Local Water Temperature First
Wetsuit thickness is all about water temperature, not air temp. A sunny 15°C day with calm water will chill you faster than a windy 5°C day in a 6/5 mm suit. Check your local water temps month by month—not the forecast. Northern spots (Baltic, North Sea, Atlantic coasts) stay cold year-round. Mediterranean and southern Spain warm up June through September. Central Europe (France, Germany, UK) gets a proper winter dip.
If you're riding Tarifa or Cape Town conditions, you'll need different suits. But across Europe proper—from Brittany to Greece—winter water sits 6–10°C. Spring and autumn swing 12–18°C. Summer Mediterranean hits 20°C+. Know your zone before you buy.
02 — Suit sizingWhy Thickness Matters (And What Those Numbers Mean)
Those two numbers—like 4/3 or 5/4—are millimetre thickness. First number is chest and back. Second is arms, legs, and panels. A 4/3 mm suit gives you core warmth with arm freedom. A 5/4 mm is warmer overall but slightly stiffer. Go thicker in winter; go thinner in summer.
For European winter, we recommend 5/4 mm or 6/5 mm as standard. Add a hooded suit (extra neck seal) when water drops below 8°C. Spring/autumn? 3/2 mm keeps you warm without overheating when you're exerting. Summer in the Med, 2/2 mm shorties are enough. Don't overthink it—pick the range for your water temp, then pick a reputable brand like Neilpryde or ION.

Frequently asked
The 4/3 mm is warmer in the chest/back (4 mm vs 5 mm core), but slightly less insulated in arms/legs. For most European winter, 5/4 mm is the safer bet. It's heavier but keeps you warmer longer.
Yes, once water drops below 8°C. Neck leaks kill warmth fast. Winter in northern Europe? Non-negotiable. Spring/autumn? A regular fullsuit works fine.
Not really. A 5/4 mm winter suit will cook you in summer. We recommend two suits: a 5/4 mm for winter (November–March) and a 3/2 mm for spring/autumn. Summer, you might not need a suit at all in the Med.
Neilpryde and ION are both engineered for European conditions. We've shipped thousands of both since 2003. Pick based on fit and budget—both will keep you warm.
