Kitesurfing Mar Menor — Los Alcázares Guide 2026

Buying Guide · Kitesurfing

Mar Menor near Los Alcázares is Europe's flattest, warmest kitesurfing lagoon — and we've sent dozens of riders there since 2003. Thermal winds build predictably March through October, making it the perfect place to dial in tricks without fighting Atlantic swell. Here's what you need to know to get it right.

⚡ Quick answer

Mar Menor delivers consistent 12–20 knot thermal winds, flat water, and warm shallow conditions (16–22°C) that let you focus on technique over survival. You'll need a 9–12 m² kite depending on season. We recommend the Duotone Evo SLS 2026 for this range because it holds power in light thermals without washing out.

01 — Spot CharacterWhy Mar Menor Is Different From Tarifa

Tarifa is raw Atlantic swell and 25+ knots most days. Mar Menor is the opposite — a protected lagoon where thermal winds build gently and the water stays flat, warm, and shallow. You won't battle the Atlantic here. You'll practice your hooked passes and handle switch tricks on glass.

The wind pattern is predictable too. Morning thermals start around 10–12 knots around 10 a.m., peak at 15–18 knots by afternoon, and fade as the sun drops. That rhythm makes it easy to plan your sessions. Spring and autumn bring the steadiest winds; summer thermals can be lighter but more playable. Water temperature stays above 16°C year-round.

💡 Tip from our buyers: Bring a 9 m² and a 12 m² if you're there for a week. The forecast can shift by 2–3 knots and you'll want both covered.

02 — Quiver PlanningKite Sizing for Mar Menor Thermals

A 9 m² kite covers you for most days March through October. In lighter spring thermals (12–14 knots), a 12 m² is safer — you'll stay powered without constant bar pressure. By late summer and autumn when thermals peak, 9 m² becomes your sweet spot. If you're under 60 kg or learning tricks that need fast kite response, 7 m² works too, but don't go smaller for Mar Menor.

For beginners: 12 m² in March–May, downsize to 9 m² by June. Lighter riders or trick-focused sessions favour 9 m². We don't recommend 14 m² or larger — thermals won't sustain that much wing and you'll fight depower instead of flying clean.

03 — Our picksOur 4 In-Stock Picks

All four of these Duotone 2026 kites excel in Mar Menor's light, predictable thermals. Each offers a different flavour — some favour stability, others pop and relaunch faster. Pick based on your style and the kite size that fits your weight and skill.

04 — MistakesThree mistakes we see every week

❌ Packing a 14 m² or bigger Mar Menor thermals top out around 18 knots. A 14 m² will overpower you fast, and depower margin gets thin. You'll spend more time fighting the bar than flying tricks. Stick to 7–12 m².
❌ Ignoring the afternoon wind drop Thermals peak between 2–4 p.m., then die fast as the sun sets. Get on the water by 10 a.m., not 5 p.m. Sessions after 5 p.m. are usually gambles.
❌ Forgetting the water's still shallow Flat doesn't mean safe for crashes. The lagoon averages 1–2 metres depth. Wear a helmet, watch for other riders, and assume the bottom is closer than you think.

Frequently asked

What's the best time to visit Mar Menor for kitesurfing?

March through October. March–May brings steady thermals but lighter wind (12–16 knots). June–August is warmest but lighter. September–October is most consistent (14–18 knots). November–February is too light and unpredictable.

Do I need a wetsuit in Mar Menor?

Year-round. Water stays 16–22°C, so a 3/2 mm spring suit works March–October. November–February, go 4/3 mm or thicker. The sun is hot but the water's cool.

Can beginners learn tricks in Mar Menor?

Yes. Flat water and predictable wind make it perfect for learning handle passes and riding switch. Bring a 12 m² for lighter wind days and expect a gentle learning curve.

How far is Los Alcázares from other European spots?

About 450 km south of Tarifa, 200 km south of Valencia. It's a short flight to Alicante or Murcia, then a 1–2 hour drive to the lagoon. Perfect for a dedicated trick-trip week.
