Cabarete's trade winds hit 15–25 knots from November through March, making it one of the most locked-in kitesurfing destinations on Earth. We've shipped dozens of kites to riders heading there since 2003. Here's exactly which size to pack and how to dial in your sessions.

⚡ Quick answer

Bring a 9 m² or 12 m² kite for Cabarete's consistent 15–25 knot trade winds. Water's 26–28°C, so rashguard only—no wetsuit needed. The Duotone Evo SLS covers the full wind range and is what we recommend most for first-timers heading there.

01 — The spotWhy Cabarete Keeps Riders Coming Back

Cabarete sits dead centre in the Caribbean trade wind belt. November through March, you're locked into consistent 15–25 knot breezes—no flaking, no waiting for a swell. The lagoons are reef-protected, so conditions stay manageable even when the wind picks up.

Water temp is 26–28°C year-round. That means a rashguard, not a wetsuit. The rider community is tight—you'll meet people from Tarifa to Cape Town, and the local spots know how to keep things friendly. We've had customers stay for weeks.

💡 Tip from our buyers: Pack your 12 m² as your primary if you're arriving November–December; 9 m² becomes your workhorse by February when the trade winds peak.

02 — Sizing for CabareteWhich Kite Size to Pack (and Why)

Cabarete's wind range is tight: 15–25 knots. That means you don't need a massive quiver. A 12 m² is your bread-and-butter choice—it'll handle the lighter days at the tail end of the season and the consistent mid-range winds that dominate. A 9 m² gives you coverage on the windier days and doubles as a freestyle kite if you want to mess around in the lagoons.

If you're 50–70 kg, start with a 12 m². If you're 70 kg+, a 12 m² is still your friend, but have a 9 m² ready for when the wind pushes 22+ knots. You'll rarely need anything smaller or larger.

04 — MistakesThree mistakes we see every week

❌ Packing a 7 m² or 17 m² We see it every season. Someone arrives with a tiny 7 m² or brings a 17 m² 'just in case'. At 15–25 knots, neither will work. A 7 m² is too small for the wind range; a 17 m² sits in your bag. Bring 9 and 12 m²—that's it.
❌ Trusting 'average' wind forecasts Cabarete's trade winds are consistent, but they're not flat. The first week of November might be 12–18 knots; by mid-January it's solid 18–25. Check local spotters—not generic weather apps—before you book your flights.
❌ Skipping a rashguard The water is warm, but sun reflection off the water and consistent wind mean you'll burn and chafe fast. A rashguard keeps you comfortable for 6-hour days. Worth the 30 euros.

Frequently asked

What's the best time to go to Cabarete?

November through March. Winds are most consistent January–February. October and April are spotty.

Do I need a 7 m² kite?

No. Cabarete rarely exceeds 25 knots. A 9 m² handles the top end; you don't need to go smaller.

Can I use a single kite all season?

A 12 m² gets you 90% of sessions. But a 9 m² on the windy days means safer sessions and more fun. We recommend both.

Which Duotone kite should I choose?

The Evo SLS is forgiving and covers the full range—pick it if it's your first trip. The Rebel SLS is for progression riders who want responsive pop.
