How to Choose Wetsuit Gloves, Booties & Hood — Cold Water Guide
Cold water doesn't care how good your technique is. You need gloves, booties, and a hood that work together—not just keep you warm, but let you move. We'll show you how to match thickness, nail the fit, and stay comfortable for hours.
Match your gloves, booties, and hood thickness to water temperature, not air temperature. Winter (5–10°C) demands a 5/4 fullsuit paired with 5mm hood, 3–5mm gloves, and 5mm booties. Fit beats bulk—booties should be snug without cutting circulation, gloves nimble enough to grip your bar.
01 — The ruleWater Temperature Is Your Starting Point
Forget air temperature. Water temperature is the only number that matters here. Summer in the Med (15–18°C)? Skip the hood, grab thin 1.5mm gloves, skip booties. Autumn Atlantic (10–13°C) demands a hood and 3mm gloves minimum. Winter Baltic or UK (5–8°C) means 5mm everything—hood, gloves, booties—paired with a 4/3 or 5/4 fullsuit like the Neilpryde Serene or Vamp.
We've shipped thousands of these since 2003, and the pattern never changes: riders who match thickness to water temp stay on the water longer. Those who guess? They're back ashore in an hour, fingers numb, toes aching.
02 — The fit testFit Matters More Than You Think
A 5mm bootie that's too tight cuts off blood flow and makes your feet colder, not warmer. A 5mm glove that's baggy kills your bar grip and ruins your riding. Snug is the target—you should feel held, not squeezed.
For booties, your heel should lock in, toes shouldn't curl, and you should be able to flex your foot without bunching fabric. For gloves, you want fingertip sensitivity: you should feel your bar through the palm, and your thumbs shouldn't wrinkle inside. Hoods are the easiest—it should sit flush on your forehead without gaps, but not press your ears uncomfortably.

Frequently asked
Start with 3mm gloves and 3–4mm booties. If that feels thin after 20 minutes, upgrade to 5mm. Layer thickness matters more than a single size fits all.
Yes, but they'll bunch at the wrist seam. Better to match: 4/3 suit = 4mm gloves. Consistency in thickness keeps you warmer.
Not essential, but a thin 2–3mm hood buys you 20+ extra minutes in the water without much bulk. If you're riding for hours, grab one.
Tight enough that your heel doesn't shift, loose enough to wiggle your toes. If you can't feel your toes after 10 minutes, it's too tight—order a size up.
