Spot Guide · Windsurf

Spring and autumn are your golden windows for Mediterranean windsurfing—thermal winds peak, water temps are rideable, and swell stays manageable. We'll break down every month so you know exactly when to book your trip.

⚡ Quick answer

Hit the Med in April–May or September–October for reliable thermal winds, water temperatures between 16–23°C, and moderate swell. Summer is warm but light; winter brings strong gusts but demands thick wetsuits.

01 — Rising heat, rising windsSpring (April–May): The Thermal Wind Sweet Spot

Spring is when the Mediterranean wakes up. Water temperatures hover between 16–19°C—cool enough to keep you sharp, warm enough that a 3/2 mm wetsuit won't feel like a straightjacket. Thermal winds are building as land masses heat faster than the sea, and you'll see consistent 12–18 knots across most spots by mid-morning.

April and May are also less crowded than summer. Tarifa, Gizzeria in Calabria, and the Greek islands all pick up solid thermals by May. Pack a 5.5 m² sail and a mid-volume freeride board (120–140 L)—you'll use both daily. The swell is still manageable, usually waist-high or smaller.

💡 Tip from our buyers: Book accommodation in May, not April—winds are more predictable, and you'll avoid the Easter rush without sacrificing warmth.

02 — The off-season gambleSummer (June–August): Hot, Flat, and Frustrating

Summer looks perfect on the postcard—25–28°C water, endless sunshine, golden light at 9 p.m. But the wind dies. Thermals struggle to build when the entire region is already hot, and you'll spend 3 out of 4 days looking at glassy water and cursing your flight booking.

If you must go: chase sea breezes on the north African coast (Morocco, Tunisia) where cooler inland air creates better pressure gradients. Bring a 6.5 m² sail and be prepared to wait. Most riders we know skip summer entirely and hit autumn instead.

03 — Our picksAutumn (September–October): Stability and Warmth

September and October deliver the best of both worlds: water stays warm (20–23°C), thermal winds are consistent, and Atlantic swells start wrapping in. This is when serious riders book their trip.

04 — MistakesThree mistakes we see every week

❌ Chasing summer sunshine June through August looks ideal on Instagram—it's not. You'll spend more time waiting for wind than riding. Spring and autumn give you predictable thermals and fewer doldrums.
❌ Underestimating winter gusts November through February brings strong, gusty winds (20–35 knots)—great for wave riding if you're skilled, but brutal if you misjudge your sail size. A 4.0 m² is essential; even then, expect choppy conditions and a 5/4 mm wetsuit minimum.
❌ Packing one sail for the whole trip Mediterranean thermals swing wildly day-to-day and month-to-month. A 4.5 m² and a 6.5 m² cover 90% of conditions; a 5.5 m² fills the gap. One sail means missed sessions.

Frequently asked

What's the best month to windsurf the Mediterranean?

May and October. Winds are consistent, water temps are rideable (18–23°C), and swell is moderate. Fewer crowds than summer, warmer than winter.

Which sail size should I bring?

Pack a 5.5 m² for spring/autumn thermals, a 4.5 m² for stronger May days, and a 6.5 m² if you chase light summer wind. Winter demands 4.0 m² or smaller.

Is winter windsurfing in the Mediterranean worth it?

Only if you're chasing power and wave riding. Winds run 25–35 knots, water drops to 8–12°C, and you'll need a 5/4 mm suit and serious skill. Spring and autumn are more forgiving.

Where do thermals work best in the Med?

Mainland coasts with mountains inland (Tarifa, Greece, Calabria) build stronger thermals than open islands. Seek spots with sheltered bays and a clear land-sea temperature contrast.
