Packing tips that prevent damage

  • Remove hardware: fins, mast, straps and sharp bits out. Bag small parts in a zip pouch.
  • Pad the tips: towel or bubble wrap on nose/tail; add cardboard “end-caps” for flights.
  • Rails & deck: a daybag or foam sheet around the board = big difference at baggage handling.
  • Weight balance: put pump, wetsuit and soft goods over the fins/rails for extra protection.
  • Moisture: dry everything before storage; rinse zips after salty trips to prevent corrosion.

Airline basics (what to expect)

  • Weight: Economy check-in is usually 23 kg; sports/biz can allow 32 kg. Always check your airline & fare.
  • Fees: some carriers count a boardbag as regular luggage if under size/weight—others charge sports fees. Book online for lower rates.
  • Declaration: say “surf equipment” or “sports equipment”—many agents have a specific code and price for it.

Printable trip checklist

  • Boards + daybags; fins & tools; spare screws; fin keys
  • Kites: main sizes + repair tape + spare pigtails
  • Bars/lines (check wear); pump (hose O-rings)
  • Wetsuit(s), booties, impact vest/helmet if needed
  • Leashes (spare); sunscreen; travel locks; luggage scale

Pro tip: Weigh your packed bag at home. Target 22.5 kg to allow for airport scale variance.
